Moving Heavy Equipment, What's Required?
Moving heavy equipment such as: 38 tonne surface grinder, statues, industrial CNC machines, lumstone grinders, hammer forgings, die caster, Masak CNC, Crown off a Minster 400 tonne capacity press, Wedge presses, 8 tonne hammers, capacity transfer presses, National cold header, Scrap yard recycling bailers, screw presses, Noble and Lunn lathes, Kendal and Gent millers, Erey drop forger 6 tonne open space hammer with a 70 tonne anvil Mitchell and Wilkins 400 tonne ring frame presses, isn’t as straightforward as someone turns up on site, moves a lifting machine into position and then moves it a few feet or miles.
There are a number of issues that need to be addressed as doing it poorly can lead to serious injury or employees and the machine movers, to damage of equipment and a loss in production due to the machine being out of use for potentially weeks or months if maintenance is required.
So let’s explore how to accomplish this correctly below and the steps required.
- Planning the move
- Moving the equipment safely and legally
- Reducing company downtime and loss in productivity
- Fitting and reinstallation documentation
- Space required during the move
- Correct equipment for moving heavy loads
- Types of Heavy equipment we have previously moved
Planning the move
As a Safe Contractor approved company we understand that getting this stage correct and completing it fully is crucial for all the steps below.
During this stage of the move all information such as: RAMs, size of equipment, where it is being moved from and to, space to work with, potential hazardous and healthy and safety concerns, identifying what equipment will be required, insurances, and staff working patterns all need to be fully documented.
Further to this, its key to understand the key requirements of reinstalling the machinery in its new location. Does it have the necessary space, and fittings?
If not, do these need to be installed prior to the machine being relocated into its new location. If so what is the timeframe for this to occur first.
If they aren’t during this stage the move of any equipment could go horribly wrong.
Moving the equipment safely and legally
Equipment, and especially heavy equipment such as: industrial CNC machine, and surface grinders (as pictured above), 120 inch lumstone grinder 50 tonne, 6 tonne hammer forgings Die caster 40 tonne, Masak CNC 26 tonne, Crown off a Minster 400 tonne capacity press weighing 26 tonne and others that can’t just be picked up and placed down. Consequently, once all RAMs are completed these need to be followed by all parties to ensure that the move is made safely and securely.
Reducing company downtime and loss in productivity
Taking a key company asset offline while the move goes ahead is something that most companies don’t look forward to. Consequently, keeping this to a minimum is a key requirement to prevent the business from losing money in production.
Further to this, the planning stage needs to be followed to make sure the equipment is not damaged during the move. If it is that piece of equipment could be out of action for potential months while it gets repaired.
All of which need to be kept to a minimum.
Fitting and reinstallation documentation
Moving heavy equipment isn’t always the biggest problem. It can easily be the reassembly if needed to be dismantled in the move, or the reinstallation of it in its new location.
As a result, keeping documentation, or making fresh instructions if none has survived, during the move of the machinery is key to get the machine back up and running again in its new location, and if the machine needs to be relocated again in the future.
Space required during the move
Getting a machine into a new location, or out of its existing location, isn’t the only thing you need to be aware of. For example, if the machine has to go up, is there enough clearance above the machine to move it in that direction, if it has to go through doors, skylights, or windows, are these wide enough, is it too wide to be placed on a flat loader, does a police escort or road closures need to be arranged ahead of time, to simply is there enough room to fit it, in its new location.
If these aren’t all considered, what could easily happen is the machine / heavy equipment is moved; but, then can’t be placed or fully moved into its new location without a lot of downtime to the company.
Correct equipment for moving heavy loads
Moving heavy equipment especially, requires specialised equipment. This equipment can consist of: forklifts, low loaders, lifts such as Versa lifts, Mea lifts such as the 200 tonne Mega lift, iron fairies and more.
But, more importantly, understanding the equipment and its sizes and weight constraints is really important to understand what moving equipment is required to get the job done, safely, quickly and efficiently.
Types of Heavy equipment we have previously moved
Below are examples of heavy equipment we have managed to relocate with minimal downtime to the company, safely, and in accordance to all Health and Safety documentation and our Safe Contractor Accreditation.
